Curriculum Statement for Art at St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School

Intent:
At St Wilfrid’s C of E Primary School, our intent is to provide well-rounded Art education that goes beyond the National Curriculum in England. Our focus is on developing skills in drawing, painting, sculpting, both independently and collaboratively. We want our students to learn to reflect on, record, and evaluate their work, as well as appreciate artists, designers, history, and culture. Through art, we aim to encourage our students to experiment, explore, and most importantly, enjoy the creative process.

Implementation:
We will achieve our intent through a variety of approaches, including dedicated art lessons that incorporate these additional focus skills. Teachers follow a clear progression of skills which ensures all pupils are challenged in line with their year group expectations and are given the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge.

We will also promote cross-curricular links to enhance students' understanding of how art can connect with other subjects. By inviting artists and designers to our school and creating an inspiring art-friendly environment, we will further enrich our students' learning experiences.

Impact:
The impact of our Art teaching will be measured through formative assessments that track students' progress over time. Regular 'sketchbook looks' will allow teachers to review and provide feedback on students' work. We will also gather feedback from pupils through pupil voice activities, peer assessments, and self-evaluations.

By the end of their time with us, we want pupils to have learned, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills. They should have an awareness of a broad range of artists and craftspeople, and be able to consider and discuss the artworks they come across. We want our pupils to be confident to explore, experiment and take risks, placing value on the process and journey that they take, not just on the finished product. Most importantly, we want children to have found and enjoyed a creative outlet – a means of self-expression and enjoyment.
