Curriculum Statement for English Reading at St. Wilfrid’s CofE Primary School
Intent:
At St. Wilfrid's CofE Primary School, our intent for the subject of English - Reading is to ensure that all children become lifelong, competent readers who are able to access, enjoy, and analyse a range of texts across different genres. Reading will be weaved through everything we do, with explicit lessons and opportunities to explore texts across the curriculum. Children will discover through texts as well as explore them in detail. They will also use the texts they have explored to create original pieces of their own work.
Implementation:
To achieve our intent, reading will be integrated into all aspects of our curriculum. Explicit reading lessons will be provided, along with opportunities for children to explore texts within various subjects. Children will engage with a variety of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and more, to develop their reading skills and understanding of different genres. Teachers will support and guide students to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate texts effectively. Children at St. Wilfrid’s will be exposed to a range of texts as the heart of all writing opportunities. Our writing approach will be text-based allowing children to use what they have read as models when creating their own compositions.
In addition, teachers at St. Wilfrid’s will strive to foster a love of reading in all children. Teachers will use opportunities where possible to share a range of age-appropriate texts and allow children the opportunity to discuss and explore them further. Children will be encouraged to share what they have discovered through their reading and celebrate reading through such events as World Book Day, author visits, online workshops and more,
Impact:
The impact of our English - Reading teaching will be measured through formative and summative assessment. Children will be encouraged to develop their understanding of the world by being prompted to discover, explore, and create in relation to the texts they have read. By the end of their time at St. Wilfrid's CofE Primary School, children will not only be fluent readers but also critical thinkers who can engage with texts meaningfully. They will have a love for reading and the skills needed to succeed academically and in their future endeavours.
