We are writing to share some information about life in Year 2.

Our two classes are Squirrels Class with Mr Palmer and Hedgehogs Class with Mrs Davies (Tuesday – Thursday) and Miss Hedgecock (Monday and Friday). Our teaching assistants are Mrs Aldridge, Miss Richings and Mrs Costello.

    Curriculum

September will begin with settling the children back into the classroom. We launch with the question ‘What makes a person significant?’ We will be thinking about the physical and emotional qualities that make us strong. The project will start by learning about knights and the children will be set the challenge of finding out about castles to help a Lord and Lady rescue their captured Prince. We will be reading a range of information books about castles and plan to write our own information pages in addition to designing and building our own shields. We will also be taking an in depth look at the battle of Hastings and how this battle changed the UK and its landscape. To accompany this the children will be reading different stories about dragons and writing our own imaginative stories. Towards the end of term we will be evaluating different puppet designs and creating our own puppets using a variety of materials and techniques. We would love for any willing volunteers to come in and support with our sewing session in the hall.

In Maths we will be continuing with ‘Power Maths’ with a focus on progressing the children’s key skills in place value and then moving onto number and calculation. In art we will be creating our own mythical dragons and in science we will be investigating the most suitable materials to build our own shields. In R.E. our key question this term is ‘What are our big questions?’  An overview of the curriculum can be found on the school website.

Homework and Reading at home

Children will continue to bring their banded reading books home from school and they should be reading for 10 minutes every day. Please fill in their Reading Record each time you read at home, filling in the title and page numbers. If you would like to write a brief comment about how your child got on then that is always helpful. The reading that the children complete at home will allow them to work towards achieving certificates for reading 20, 50, 100 times and beyond and these will be awarded to the children in Celebration Worship on a Friday morning.

In Year 2 children will have homework sent home on a Friday which will be due in on the following Wednesday. Each week this will rotate between maths, English or project activity. Further details about spellings will follow soon.

PE

This term, PE in Year 2 is on a Wednesday and Thursday and on these days children should attend school in their PE kit. If there is any reason why your child cannot participate in a PE session, please let the class teacher know via the year group email address. PE is only cancelled in the event of heavy rain, icy or extremely cold conditions. Therefore, a pair of jogging bottoms (ideally navy) and school sweatshirt can be worn. Children with pierced ears must be able to remove their own earrings or cover these with tape provided from home. Long hair should also be tied back.

Water bottles and Snacks

Please remember to bring in a named water bottle every day. Children will be provided with their fruit snack for playtimes however if they would like to bring in an additional healthy snack for break time then they can (for example, fresh fruit, a bagel, raisins). Please ensure any snacks are both nut and egg free.

Uniform

Please ensure your child has a waterproof coat in school every day as children will only stay inside at playtimes if it is raining heavily.  All clothing, including PE kit, should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

We are really looking forward to a great Autumn Term. If at any point you have a message for your child’s teacher, please contact us through the year group email: year2@stwilfrids-hh.school and we will respond as soon as we can.
