Curriculum Statement for Writing at St. Wilfrid's CofE Primary School
Intent:
At St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School, our intent for the subject of English - Writing is to develop a love of writing in our students, encouraging them to become confident, skilled ‘St Wilfrid Writers’. Children will be exposed to looking at a diverse range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry to support their understanding of a variety of genres.
Implementation:
To accomplish this intent, our children will follow a progression of skills that will enable students to develop their writing abilities from foundational to advanced levels. Our daily lessons will be consistently structured in a sequence that promotes developing their learning and understanding, practicing and consolidating skills. They will also use the wealth of texts they have explored to create original pieces of their own work to inspire and engage our students in their writing journey.
In addition, teachers at St. Wilfrid’s will strive to model exceptional writing through use of WAGOLLs (What a good one looks like) that demonstrate the skills the children will be learning over the week and including existing skills, this will grow them into a St Wilfrid’s Writer. Teachers will live mark in their lessons to allow children to make immediate changes and ensure the skills are being used effectively. Children will be encouraged to peer assess, weaving our school values through our lessons to develop respectful learning partners. Teachers will create opportunities for the children to read their work aloud, to support voice of a writer.
Impact:
The impact of our teaching in English Writing at St Wilfrid's C of E Primary School will be measured through both formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments will provide ongoing feedback to students and teachers to track progress and guide instruction. Summative assessments will be used to evaluate students' overall achievement in writing skills, ensuring that they are meeting the intended outcomes of our curriculum. Through this approach, we aim to nurture a generation of writers who are skilled, imaginative, and passionate about expressing themselves through the written word.
