Curriculum Statement for PSHE/RHE at St. Wilfrid's CofE Primary School
Intent
At St. Wilfrid's C of E Primary School, we are deeply committed to providing a holistic and enriching PSHE curriculum that goes beyond the National Curriculum requirements. Our intent is to enable our children to develop their emotional literacy in a learning environment where they know their ideas and views will be listened to and respected by all. We aim to nurture their social, emotional, and moral development, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and contribute positively to our worldwide community. By focusing on the holistic development of our students and fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and responsibility, we aim to empower them to become confident, compassionate, and socially aware individuals who can positively contribute to their school, local community, and beyond.
Implementation
To achieve our intent, we will implement a range of high-quality PSHE/RHE lessons that are closely linked to the core values of our school. We will use the Islington Primary PHSE Scheme of Work for guidance, adapted to the needs of our children. These lessons will be designed to encourage students to actively discover information, explore different perspectives, and creatively express their own thoughts and reflections. Our teaching approach will be engaging and interactive, using a variety of resources including multimedia tools, guest speakers, and real-life scenarios to make learning relevant and meaningful to our students. We will promote a safe and inclusive learning environment where children feel empowered to share their thoughts and feelings openly.
Impact
The impact of PSHE teaching will be measured through formative and summative assessment in engaging ways. Each PSHE topic will begin with a formative assessment to gauge students' prior knowledge and understanding. Throughout the lessons, children will have opportunities for self-reflection and peer feedback to deepen their learning. At the end of each topic, a summative assessment will be conducted to assess students' progress and understanding. We will track the impact of our PSHE curriculum through student feedback, observations, and analysis of learning outcomes to ensure that we are effectively meeting the emotional and social needs of our children.
By focusing on the holistic development of our students and fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and responsibility, we aim to empower them to become confident, compassionate, and socially aware individuals who can positively contribute to their school, local community, and beyond.
